R&GV Railroad Museums Ready for Opening Weekend
Looking for a fun family adventure? New York State’s largest collection of historic railroad cars and operating vintage diesels can be found just 20 minutes south of Rochester. Located off Route 251 in the Town of Rush, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is celebrating Father’s Day Weekend with special train rides on June 20 and 21. “Not only can you see the trains, you can ride them,” explained museum president Mike Dow, “Many visitors take their first train ride ever with us.”
The mile-and-a-half train ride departs from the museum’s Industry Depot, built in 1909 to serve the nearby Industry School. Step back in time as you purchase your ticket from the friendly agent. Climb aboard authentically restored freight train cabooses for the ride through the museum’s grounds overlooking the Oatka valley. Tour the collection of vintage trains at your own pace, while volunteers are happy to answer your questions about Rochester’s rich railroading heritage. Popular food truck “Cheesed and Confused” will also be serving up heavenly grilled cheese sandwiches on June 20.
The R&GV Railroad Museum is open June 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for youth and seniors.
