Sound Transit will hold an open house on Jan. 14 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Neptune Theater, 1303 N.E. 45th St., to seek public feedback on designs for the Northgate Link Extension U District Station. The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.
The station, now at 90 percent design, will be located in the U District neighborhood on Brooklyn Avenue Northeast between Northeast 45th and Northeast 43rd streets. The station, which will have two entrances along Brooklyn Avenue Northeast, will include elevators, escalators, stairs and 100 bike spaces. Riders will board trains underground.
The U District Station is one of three stations that will serve the Northgate Link Extension that voters approved in the 2008 Sound Transit 2 ballot measure. The $2.1 billion dollar project will connect the University of Washington Station at Husky Stadium to a 4.3-mile extension that will operate underground to stations at Northeast 45th Street and Brooklyn Avenue Northeast, and Northeast 65th Street and 12th Avenue Northeast, before emerging at the Maple Leaf Portal at Northeast 92nd Street between Interstate 5 and the First Avenue Northeast. Trains continuing north will travel on an elevated guideway to Northeast 103rd Street at Northgate Mall.
The station will provide a five-minute ride to Northgate Mall, an eight-minute ride to downtown and 42-minute ride to Sea-Tac Airport and connect to several King County Metro bus routes. The extension is scheduled to open in 2021.
