Twenty one women will graduate on Friday, July 15, from the first all-female Metro construction boot camp as part of the program “Women Build Metro Los Angeles.” The six-week boot camp was held at the Los Angeles Trade Tech College campus and included heavy lifting, shoveling and wheelbarrow use among other activities. After the ceremony, prime contractors and trade union representatives will interview graduates interested in careers in the construction industry.
In early 2012, the Metro Board of Directors approved policies designed to help more people gets jobs on Metro construction projects. The policies include a goal of 6.9 percent female participation in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. The 21 women graduating on Friday will help Metro fulfill its hiring goals.
