Calling all city planners, elected officials, transportation wonks, housing advocates, environmentalists and urban enthusiasts. A Rail~Volution is coming to the Bay Area next month. For the past 20 years, Rail~Volution has produced a conference on building livable communities with transit. Based on its success, the organization has become a well-respected resource for public, private, and non-profit leaders interested in promoting transit, land-use, and transit oriented development.  With 22 mobile workshops and over 75 thought-provoking discussion events, this conference goes above and beyond the traditional sit-and-listen. Visitors will get to tour new projects such as the Transbay Transit Center, the newest BART regional rail extensions, and see the brand-new Sonoma County transit system (SMART).

This year, the Rail~volution conference may be the only opportunity where one may explore a variety of successful transit infused land-use projects and hear from noted French experts regarding high-speed rail (HSR) station area planning.

“California Day”

Bigger and Bolder: Preparing California Communities for High-Speed Rail

This year, Rail~volution will wrap up with a “California Day” session focused on the state’s HSR project.

“The session brings together visionaries to discuss what transit and land-use advocates can do to promote bolder, bigger-scale and more coherent planning that will make the most of the state’s significant investment in High Speed Rail,” Eric Eidlin said. Eidlin, urban and regional policy fellow of the German Marshall Fund of the U.S. and sustainability lead with the Federal Transit Administration, spearheaded the “California Day” session.

Breakout sessions to discuss three of California’s future (HSR) stations — Los Angeles Union Station, Fresno and San Jose Diridon — will be followed by an international perspective. Eidlin will ask experts from France – where HSR has been in service for more than three decades – to enrich the discussion with their insights and perspectives.

“AREP Chief Executive Officer, Étienne Tricaud of Paris and Bordeaux-Euratlantique Chief Executive Officer Stephan De Fay of Bordeaux, were invited to offer their insights on how U.S. communities might think bigger and more holistically about their investments in large transportation projects,” Eidlin said.

Rail~Volution 2016 will be held Oct 9-12 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, 5 Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA 94111.
