Amtrak, in conjunction with VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail), New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and other federal agencies, will resume train service between New York City and Montreal via the Adirondack train beginning April 3.
“Whether you’re experiencing the greatness of New York City, the culture of Montreal or the beauty of the Hudson Valley and Lake Champlain region, the return of the Adirondack provides customers with a reliable, relaxing and sustainable way to travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “Thanks to the strong support and advocacy of Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand, Congresswoman Stefanik and our partners at NYSDOT, VIA Rail and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), we’re proud to restore service to one of the most popular trains in the northeast.”
“I am pleased to celebrate the return of Amtrak’s Adirondack service connecting New York City and Montreal via Albany and the North Country. For three years, this vital link connecting New York and Canada has been suspended as a pandemic measure, but beginning April 3, New York will again be all aboard the Adirondack,” said U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY).
“The Adirondack line’s years-long closure has been economically harmful to many of the communities along its route,” said U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). “I urged Amtrak to reopen the line for months, and I’m proud to be announcing that it will be resuming service ahead of the busy summer tourist season. This is an important development, and I will keep fighting to provide the North Country with the resources and services it needs to thrive.”
“This restoration of passenger service will increase travel options for people in New York and around Montreal,” said FRA Administrator Amit Bose. “With the funding and resources provided by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Federal Railroad Administration looks forward to working with Amtrak, states, federal and local elected officials and others to modernize America’s rail network, increasing safety and reliability while bringing world-class passenger rail to even more communities across the country.”
“The cultural riches and natural beauty along the Adirondack train route amount to an experience that is unlike anything else in the world, and it highlights the importance of this service – making it easy and fun for travelers to be able to enjoy these unique treasures,” said NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. “We are pleased to work with our partners at Amtrak on the reopening of this vital connection between New York City and Montreal and commend them for their ongoing commitment to providing reliable, safe passenger rail service to the beautiful destinations across New York State and beyond.”
“VIA Rail is pleased to collaborate with Amtrak on the return of the Montreal – New York train, a pleasant and popular service that connects our two great countries and gives passengers on both sides of the border more travel options,” said Martin R Landry, president and chief executive officer at VIA Rail Canada. “The Adirondack train provides a beautiful, sustainable and efficient travel experience and allows passengers to connect in Montreal to VIA Rail trains that can transport them anywhere in Canada.”
The first northbound Adirondack train will depart Moynihan Train Hall at New York Penn Station (NYP) at 8:41 a.m. on April 3rd and arrive in Canada’s Gare Centrale/Central Station in Montreal at 8:16 p.m. for the first time since 2020. The first southbound Adirondack train since 2020 will depart Montreal at 11:10 a.m. on April 4th and arrive at NYP at 10:15 p.m. Additional popular destinations in on the Adirondack include Albany-Rensselaer, Poughkeepsie, Saratoga Springs and Schenectady, N.Y.
New York State and Montreal travelers and visitors can expect the same amenities onboard on the Adirondack as they do on most Amtrak trains, including, free Wi-Fi, the freedom to use phones and electronic devices at all times (no “airplane mode”), the ability to travel with small pets within the U.S., a café car, large spacious seats with ample leg room and no middle seat.
