Amtrak names Siemens as preferred bidder for new ICTs
Siemens Mobility Inc. has been identified as the preferred bidder by Amtrak to manufacture a new fleet of 83 Intercity Trainsets (ICTs) for use on the Northeast Corridor, Palmetto and various state-supported routes. The new single-level ICTs will replace the Amfleet I, Metroliner cab and Cascades service fleets and will provide modern rail amenities for customers.
According to information from the railroad released when the 2019 Request for Proposals was issued, the new ICT amenities will include improved Wi-Fi equipment and connectivity, improved seating, weather-tight doors and vestibules, as well as freedom to move throughout the train conveniently. The modernized fleet will also feature large picture windows, improved climate control systems for passenger comfort and completely new designs for restrooms and passageways between cars. Also, the new rail equipment will feature bi-directional operating capability, which will minimize endpoint turnaround times and provide operating efficiency.
“This new state-of-the-art equipment will not only provide Amtrak customers with an enjoyable and efficient travel experience, it will also enable us to improve safety, increase passenger capacity and reduce carbon emissions,” said Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn.
Accompanying the contract to manufacture the trainsets will be a long-term service agreement for technical support, spares and material supply.
Amtrak has targeted summer 2021 for contract execution and notice to proceed. Amtrak will spend the time between now and then continuing negotiations with Siemens for this generational procurement.
