MARTA employee Kevin Chong takes you on a virtual tour of Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority's (MARTA) two stations on the Gold Northeast line: Doraville and Chamblee.
The Doraville and Chamblee communities hold one of the largest Asian communities in the country. Many Latin American countries are also represented. More than half the residents speak a language other than English as their first language.
Some of the most popular destinations in the nearby communities include: The Buford Highway Farmer's Market, featuring international foods and a focus on Korean. Bus route 39 starts at Doraville Station and travels down the Buford Highway corridor all the way to Lindbergh Station. Along the way is a variety of dining, shopping and businesses that include Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Mexican and many other Latin and Asian influences. The Doraville Station is also a connection for the Gwinnett bus transit system.
If you take a random count of license plates in the Doraville Station parking lots you will find more than half of them are folks driving from Hall, Forsyth, Barrow and Gwinnett who choose to park and ride the train into town.
The former General Motors Assembly Plant is located on the west side of the Doraville Station. It was recently sold for redevelopment and plans are to build a livable, mixed-use transit-oriented development.
A quick train ride south takes us to Chamblee Station. The "International District" is on the east side of the station, and "Antique Row" is to the west. Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, known as PDK, is the second busiest airport in Georgia!, and is a quick walk or bus ride away. You can see the runway from the Chamblee Station platform.
The Atlanta Chinese Cultural Center is also nearby, just a 3-minute walk. It's known for its Chinese New Year festivities. On the west side of Chamblee Station you will find new lofts and condos along Peachtree Road. They are very popular due to the proximity to the train station. Just a few blocks north is downtown Chamblee and where Antique Row begins. Antique lovers can spend a day hunting through antique, consignment, and thrift shops.
We hope you enjoy the video tour!
