VIA Metropolitan Transit partnered with San Antonio District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales and Vision Zero San Antonio to expand the ongoing “VIAware: Stop, Look and Listen" campaign launched in January. Gonzales administered the Vision Zero Safety Pledge to VIA operators and staff as part of the City of San Antonio’s communitywide safe roadways campaign.

“With today’s pledge, we are reaffirming our commitment to safety while reinforcing the strength of our partnership with Councilwoman Gonzales and her colleagues on the San Antonio City Council, our many suburban city partners, and other partners committed to advancing Vision Zero San Antonio,” VIA President and CEO Jeffrey C. Arndt said. “We look forward to putting this pledge into practice as we continue to serve the Greater San Antonio Region with more than 44 million passenger trips per year, and a standing safety record that is among the best in the nation — an achievement we are very proud of.”

As part of VIA’s ongoing commitment to safety, the pledge supports VIA’s existing high safety standards. Operators were invited to sign a “pledge wall” that will stand at VIA’s Operations Center and be available for others to sign.

Vision Zero is a national safe roadways initiative whose message is that safety is shared between those who design the road and those who use the road. Vision Zero serves as both an attitude toward life and a strategy for designing a safe transportation system.
