“This new and improved crossing at Islip Station will feature pedestrian signals and new walkways, lighting and fencing to provide our customers with a safe and well-lit way to get to their platforms,” said Patrick Nowakowski, president of the Long Island Rail Road.
The upgraded Nassau Avenue crossing, which already had gates, flashing lights and bells to control vehicular traffic, is now outfitted with pedestrian cross arms and warning lights on new walkways with new lighting and fencing. The crossing replaces a former at-grade, pedestrian-only crossing approximately 150 feet away which is now sealed with high-security steel fencing.
Because these changes included the closing of one pedestrian crossing and alterations to another, it was necessary for the LIRR to petition the New York State Department of Transportation for approval. The railroad made its case for closure at a public hearing in November 2015. The DOT agreed and directed that the project be completed by December 31, 2016.
Sixty Montauk Branch trains pass through Islip on a typical weekday.
