Palm Tran was honored with two prestigious safety awards during the Safety Council of Palm Beach County’s 21st awards luncheon. The annual event held March 8, 2018, recognizes organizations for demonstrating a commitment to safety.

“Safety is a top priority for Palm Tran. We are honored to receive two awards that commend our innovative efforts to advancing the safety of our organization,” said Palm Tran Executive Director Clinton B. Forbes.

Palm Tran received recognition for retrofitting buses with “flashing lights” on the rear of the vehicles. Within a few months of installation, Palm Tran’s metrics revealed a tremendous reduction in rear-end collisions on the 55 buses that were part of the initial retrofitting. The program has now been expanded to include all 157 buses in the fleet.

“Retrofitting the buses with flashing lights significantly reduced the number of rear-end collisions, and since the project was developed and installed in-house, it proved to be an incredibly cost-effective initiative as well – especially compared to the cost of litigation and repair of buses from accidents,” Forbes said.

Palm Tran also received recognition for its commitment to safe workplace practices.

“Palm Tran strives to keep safety at the forefront, so we appreciate the recognition. This new feature on our buses combined with rigorous bus operator training, along with consistently inspecting and maintaining our vehicles ensures optimal safety and efficiency,” Director of Operations Sean Smith said.
