The Milwaukee Common Council is honoring a Milwaukee County Transit System driver who helped the victim of a rollover crash in Milwaukee.

Common Council members gathered at City Hall on Tuesday, March 26th, 2019 to commend Shannon Johnson and present him with a special plaque.

Johnson remained calm in November 2018 when a car ran a red light and hit a SUV at the intersection of Fond du Lac and Center. The SUV flipped over and came to rest along the sidewalk in front of Johnson’s bus.

While MCTS Dispatchers contacted authorities, Shannon jumped out of his bus and ran towards the smoking vehicle. Shannon looked inside and saw that a man was trapped. He asked whether anyone else was inside. The man said ‘no,’ prompting Shannon and other witnesses to work together to pry open the door and get the man to safety.

Hundreds of millions of people around the globe have viewed or read about Shannon and other MCTS employees’ inspiring actions, thanks to the MCTS Excellence program and the broad reach of social media, TV, radio and newspapers.
