Natural Gas Vehicle Institute (NGVi), the ASE CASE-accredited leader in technical training for the CNG and LNG industry, has announced a new web-based training workshop, "Essentials of CNG Fuel System Inspections". Presented by NGVi's executive director and co-founder, Leo Thomason, this 90-minute training workshop is designed to provide heavy-duty fleets with the necessary fundamentals to safely and skillfully inspect CNG fuel systems. It will take place on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. PST.
Effective CNG fuel system inspections are one of the key factors contributing to overall NGV fleet safety. Although CNG fuel systems have been proven to be extremely safe due to stringent federal and manufacturer requirements, they require specific safety procedures, including routine CNG fuel system inspections. These inspections are specific and detailed processes, during which qualified fuel system inspectors must be able to properly identify and determine the extent or significance of any damage discovered to system components, including the fuel cylinders, and be clear on what specific actions must be taken.
"While CNG fuel systems are very safe, we must remember that natural gas is stored onboard these vehicles at very high pressures," said Thomason. "An incident resulting from improper installation or undetected external damage to the CNG fuel system can be very dangerous, and could affect not only the safety of fleet employees, but also the general public. This particularly applies to fleets that routinely operate in populated residential areas, such as refuse and transit fleets," he added. "It is critical that technicians be qualified, and that they know how to identify CNG fuel system damage or other issues which may occur during vehicle operation."
The interactive web-based training workshop will include real-life examples and photos from the actual inspection process, followed by a question-and-answer session. Some topics to be covered include types of CNG fuel system inspections, who should conduct the inspections, applicable code requirements and manufacturer guidelines, recommended intervals, what should be inspected during General and Detailed Visual Inspections, and necessary tools and forms to be used. All participants will receive an electronic copy of NGVi's CNG Fuel System Inspection form.
