Houston Metro unveils new student-designed bus shelter
Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (Houston Metro) leaders joined Aldine ISD administrators, students and community organizations to unveil a new bus shelter designed by Dwight D. Eisenhower high school seniors.
"This competition was the brainchild of Brad Kaplan, an Aldine ISD educator who came to Metro to pitch the idea of giving high school students a real-world opportunity to develop a product from conception to completion," said Houston Metro Board Chair Sanjay Ramabhadran.
The new, fully accessible shelter is located directly in front of the high school and features a unique curved design. A mural adorning the bus shelter celebrates the school's 50th anniversary and was created by students from Eisenhower's visual arts department.
"Quality bus shelters are important because they are part of our commitment through METRONext to provide a better walk, a better stop and a better ride," said Houston Metro President and CEO Tom Lambert. "Now, more than ever, we need to take advantage of opportunities like this bus shelter competition because it empowers our youth to be a part of solutions that address local challenges."
The Eisenhower team competed against hundreds of other students, spending months working on design proposals. The result of their hard work and determination is now embodied in a bus shelter that will serve other students and members of the Near Northwest community for years to come.
