Bay Area Rapid Transit has announced it is removing from service the street-level escalator at the Market and 2nd Street entrance to Montgomery Street Station on July 24, 2017. This is a major repair that will replace the escalator controller unit with a new solid-state unit along with other repairs.

The unit will be out of service for 12 weeks, until approximately the middle of October.

BART will perform the same work on twelve escalator units at the following stations over the course of two years: Embarcadero, Montgomery, 16th and 24th Mission stations. The work being done involves major electrical system overhaul of existing escalators that continue to malfunction. This repair work is expected to be complete by 2018 and will result in more reliable escalators and access.
