TransLink is planning for a new four-lane Pattullo Bridge that is consistent with the Mayors’ Council’s 10-Year Vision. The new bridge — expected to be open in early 2023 — will be located just north and upstream of the existing bridge.
Features of the new bridge will include:
- A safer crossing with wider lanes and a centre median that separates traffic travelling in opposite directions;
- A more reliable crossing, as modern lane widths will increase capacity on the four-lane bridge by 10 per cent;
- Enhanced community connections that will improve travel time in New Westminster and Surrey; and
- Pedestrian and cyclist paths that are separated from traffic on both sides of the bridge, including viewpoints for sightseeing or resting and suicide prevention measures.
Once funding is secured, TransLink will be ready to begin the procurement process in late 2017. Currently, TransLink is completing the preliminary bridge design and undergoing an environmental assessment for the project.
Once fully funded, TransLink will be ready to commence procurement by issuing the Request for Qualifications in late 2017. Bridge construction is expected to start in 2019.
TransLink will continue to engage and inform the public and stakeholders throughout all phases of the project, including the bridge design, environmental assessment, funding, and, ultimately, construction.
