Electronic Gates at Auckland's Henderson Station Are Live
Electronic gates began operating at Auckland Transport's Henderson Station on Tuesday August 8, 2017.
The new gates will mean that customers cannot enter or leave the station without presenting a valid HOP card to swipe in or out at the machines or a valid paper ticket.
Those who have boarded the train without a valid ticket or HOP card will need to return to the station where they boarded the train to buy one.
The station footbridge will also be closed after the last train at night and reopened before the first train each morning.
These changes are being made as part of the Auckland Transport initiative to improve the overall experience for rail customers, and improve public safety.
Electronic gates make it simpler for bus and train journeys, with a single fare being charged for each journey, even if customers take several buses or trains to get to their destination. For example, customers pay for one entire journey from A to B, instead of paying for each bus or train separately. Tag on and off each bus and train and at the end of a journey and customers will be charged a single fare. During a journey, customers can use up to 5 buses or trains within 4 hours, with up to 30 minutes transfer time between each trip.
The electronic gates are already in use at Britomart, Newmarket, New Lynn, and Manukau stations. Next week, electronic gates will go live at Ōtāhuhu Station.
They will also be installed at Manurewa, Papatoetoe, Middlemore, Parnell, Papakura, and Glen Innes stations under the recently-announced Safety and Fare Enforcement (SaFE) project.
SaFE is a joint commitment between AT and passenger rail operator, Transdev Auckland, to deliver initiatives that will improve customer experience, increase security and safety, and reduce vandalism and fare evasion by the end of 2019.
