Tolar Manufacturing Company was recently selected by ND Construction, Inc. to design and fabricate 41 custom-built transit shelters for the city of Santa Ana, California.
The city successfully obtained a grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority to complete this project, which consists of four uniquely sized shelters that are fabricated into purpose-built galvanized steel structures with aesthetically pleasing blue and red tinted polycarbonate roof panels and integrated benches. Security lighting that doubles as decorative up lighting is provided by energy saving, dusk-to-dawn solar powered LED illumination.
“One of the unique features of this project is the papel picado wall treatments found on many of the shelters,” stated Tolar Manufacturing founder and president Gary Tolar. Papel picado translates to “pecked or perforated paper,” a popular Mexican folk art where decorative tissue paper is cut into elaborate designs in celebration of special occasions. Incorporating this important element into the bus shelters honors Santa Ana’s heritage and culture.
“We are proud to complete the engineered designs and fabricate the transit shelters of such a fantastic project for the city of Santa Ana and its residents,” commented Kerry Berlin, business development manager for Tolar Manufacturing. “These shelters, especially with the papel picado treatment, really play to Tolar’s strengths of being dedicated to ensuring that we create a true Sense of Place in all of our community projects.”
All 41 shelters are currently being installed through out the city of Santa Ana.
