JTA Holds Groundbreaking for the Kernan Boulevard Project

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony this morning for the JTAMobilityWorks Kernan Boulevard project.

Kernan Boulevard is the third major roadway construction project under the JTAMobilityWorks program. The scope includes widening of the existing roadway to a six-lane, divided urban section with a raised median from Atlantic Boulevard to Matthew Ungar Drive and a four-lane section from Matthew Unger Drive to McCormick Road.

These sections will include curb and gutter additions, utility improvements, sidewalks and a 12-foot multi-use path on the east side of the road. The project also includes five new drainage ponds and a closed drainage system.

“We are excited to break ground on the highly anticipated Kernan Boulevard project under the JTAMobilityWorks program,” said JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “This road widening project will improve safety, reduce congestion and provide mobility options on Kernan Boulevard.”

The $20.9 million contract was awarded to Superior Construction. The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2020.

In attendance at the ceremony were State Representative Clay Yarborough; Jacksonville City Council President-Elect Aaron Bowman; Jacksonville City Council Members Al Ferraro and John Crescimbeni; former State Representative Lake Ray; JTA Board Chairman Isaiah Rumlin; JTA Board Members Kevin Holzendorf, Ari Jolly and Denise Wallace; and JTA CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. Michelle Barth from Senator Bill Nelson’s office, Matthew Dews from Senator Marco Rubio’s office and Chris Miller from Congressman John Rutherford’s office were also in attendance.
