Metra will be closing the 103rd St./Rosemoor Station on the Electric Line Nov. 20 for a full reconstruction that will include making it accessible to persons with disabilities. The station is expected to be closed between seven and 12 months.
The work is part of the Metra Electric Community Initiative, a multiyear, multimillion-dollar plan to transform 13 stations on the line. Three of those stations – 103rd St./Rosemoor, 79th St./Chatham and 87th St./Woodruff – are being rehabbed under the same $33.9 million contract. When completed, all three stations will have enclosed, ADA-accessible street-level entrances and lobbies with elevators, new stairs and headhouses, new composite deck platforms and new lighting and signage.
To reduce the impact on customers, the work is being done in stages so that no more than two of the stations are closed at one time. The 79th St. Chatham closed for reconstruction in July and work on 87th St./Woodruff is scheduled to begin when 79th St./Chatham reopens next spring.
While 103rd St./Rosemoor is closed, customers can use 107th St. and 95th St./Chicago State University as alternatives.
“This project aims to bring modern and accessible public transit facilities to these communities,” said Metra CEO and Executive Director Jim Derwinski. “The Metra Electric Community Initiative program is part of our commitment to My Metra riders to prioritize station improvements and promote transit ridership by creating welcoming and accessible gateways to their communities.”
The contract for the construction work at the three stations was awarded to IHC Construction of Elgin, which has committed to subcontracting 30 percent of the work to DBE firms. Metra is funding the work with its share of funding from the Rebuild Illinois capital program.
Similar work is underway at the 147th St./Sibley Boulevard Station and is expected to be completed in spring 2024. Work also began this spring at the line’s Homewood Station.
