At InnoTrans 2016, Kapsch was showcasing its latest form of mobile ticketing, an open-loop system. With a pay-as-you-go system, the card or smartphone is used as an identifier, not as the tariff.
Urban mobility management is faced with the difficult task of coordinating different, sometimes contradictory, interests in smart city concepts. Residents and visitors want to reach their destinations quickly, and local businesses want maximum connectivity. It is also important that traffic be reduced to a minimum to relieve the burden on the environment and increase the quality of city life.
With the open-loop system, passengers can use their smartphone, an ID card, a credit card or a transit property’s own smartcard to tap in and out when riding transit. Riders can put money in an account or pay at the end of a billing cycle. Passengers no longer need to think about what kind of pass or ticket they need to buy; the system calculates the best fare based on their use.
