BART speeds Muni transfer, improves accessibility and reduces fare evasion with Embarcadero platform fare gate

This time-saving improvement means riders arriving by train to Embarcadero can now tag out at the platform and take the elevator to the Muni platform and then tag Clipper on board the Muni streetcar.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) installed a newly designed fare gate at the Embarcadero platform by the elevator, which gives riders the ability to tag out of the station with Clipper at the platform instead of the concourse.

This time-saving improvement means riders arriving by train to Embarcadero can now tag out at the platform and take the elevator to the Muni platform and then tag Clipper on board the Muni streetcar. Previously, BART riders had to travel up two levels to the concourse, reach around to tag out of BART at the fare gate, travel to the Muni entrance, tag in at their fare gate and travel down one level.

Improved accessibility

For riders who rely on elevators, the new platform fare gate improves access to the station by streamlining the path to tag in or out of the station. Tagging out of the station was difficult and cumbersome for those who are unable to reach around the fare gate to tag out after using the elevator.

Reduces fare evasion

This new change requires riders to pass through a fare gate if they use the elevator. The newly designed wide fare gate features a tall swing style barrier that bolts shut when closed preventing people from pushing through it or going over or under the barrier.

BART now has fare gates at the elevators at the following stations:

Embarcadero (platform)

Montgomery (platform)

Richmond (concourse)

Coliseum (concourse)

Bay Fair (platform)

Balboa Park (platform)

Concord (concourse)

BART plans to install elevator fare gates at the following stations in 2022:

Civic Center

Powell

Rockridge

El Cerrito Plaza

Walnut Creek

North Berkeley
