YRT to begin allowing purchase of E-Tickets through PRESTO E-Tickets app Nov. 5
York Region Transit (YRT) customers will be able to purchase E-Tickets through the PRESTO E-Tickets app, starting Nov. 5, 2024. The app is available in the Google Play store or Apple App store.
The agency notes that not only is the E-ticket cheaper than paying cash fare, the purchasing process simplifies the ticketing process across the entire YRT system. Once a PRESTO E-Ticket is purchased through the app, it can be saved on the customer’s device, making the digital ticket usable without internet access. Before boarding, customers must activate the E-Ticket selected. When boarding, customers then show the E-Ticket for visual validation or scan the ticket’s QR code using the barcode reader on the PRESTO fare payment device. Purchasing E-Tickets allows customers the option to purchase and activate tickets for a group all at once.
As early as Nov. 12, the agency says YRT E-Tickets will no longer be available for purchase through the YRT Pay and Transit apps. Towards the end of that month, any previously purchased tickets on the YRT Pay app will automatically be transferred to the PRESTO E-Tickets app. Existing YRT Pay app customers can use their current login credentials to log into the PRESTO E-Tickets app to access their tickets and make new purchases.
In addition to YRT tickets, the PRESTO E-Tickets app allows customers to purchase tickets for other transit agencies across Canada, including Durham Region Transit, Hamilton Street Railway and Oakville Transit, offering greater convenience for commuters across regions.
YRT notes transfers within the system remain free within a two-hour window while cross-agency transfers will require an additional fare. The agency says customers traveling between transit agencies may want to consider using their physical PRESTO card or PRESTO in mobile wallet to benefit from the One Fare discount.
