MBTA Launches Perq for Work
The MBTA launched Perq for Work, the rebranding of its tax-advantaged Corporate Pass Program. In an effort to modernize the image of the T’s employer pass program and better communicate its "perks," Perq is the new name of the monthly pass program for companies that want to offer this added benefit to their employees.
First implemented in 1974 as a pilot program with one business, the MBTA’s employer pass program has continued, becoming one of the oldest in the country. Since its inception, it has grown into a sales channel accounting for nearly $200 million in MBTA fares and passes, serving diverse enterprises of both small businesses and large corporate entities. Employers who take part in the program receive tax savings while being able to offer the benefit to prospective employees during talent recruitment. Additionally, the program has the potential to bolster employee satisfaction, and ease transportation challenges for employees who rely on bus, subway, Commuter Rail, and ferry service for their daily commutes.
“By relaunching our program as Perq, we’re hoping to reengage with the business community, renew awareness of the program, and entice new businesses of all sizes to sign up and realize the benefits,” said MBTA General Manager Luis Manuel Ramírez. “Understanding our business community sees transportation services as a major need for their employees, our new program provides better information in a simpler manner for those who would consider joining.”
In addition to the introduction of a new name for its pass program, the MBTA has also launched a rebranded and easier-to-navigate program website at perq.mbta.com, and program participants will receive new fare cards.
There are no annual fees or subscription costs associated with Perq and all aspects of the program will remain the same. The cost of the program is simply the cost of purchasing Perq cards, which are the same price as any monthly subway/bus or Commuter Rail pass, but tax-advantaged for net savings for the employer and the employee. Companies of any size can offer Perq to any number of employees, and there are no minimums required to participate. All employees — including part-time employees and shift workers — are eligible, and any employer with a Federal Tax ID number can offer Perq to their employees.
