BART seeks input on developing its next generation fare gates

Sept. 29, 2020
BART issues RFEI for its next generation of fares gates, which will be designed to improve customer experience through new technology while reducing fare evasion.

BART announced on Sept. 28, 2020, the release of a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for parties interested in providing input on innovative solutions to assist BART in developing an approach for its next generation fare gates. This RFEI is an opportunity for parties to share information on BART’s Next Generation Fare Gate Project and is designed to assess the potential benefits, challenges and feasibility of alternatives.

The project aims to replace existing fare gates systemwide to improve customer experience, take advantage of new technology and to reduce fare evasion. BART currently operates 50 transit stations with 715 fare gates. In recent years, BART has undertaken several initiatives, including a design study, surveys, and pilots, to develop a path forward. This RFEI will assist BART in its next steps.

The RFEI provides details on BART’s preferred design and implementation approach as well as a preliminary scope of work. It asks firms to respond to several questions, including their experience with similar projects, availability of off-the-shelf solutions that meet BART’s requirements, and their fare gate features that deter fare evasion, among other topics. Answers to these questions will assist in completing BART’s assessment of alternatives.

Parties interested in submitting a response can send a request to receive a copy of the RFEI to [email protected] with the firm’s name and the name, e-mail address, and telephone number for a contact person. Questions regarding this RFEI should be submitted to [email protected] no later than 4:00 P.M. PDT on Oct. 28, 2020 and responses to the RFEI should be submitted no later than 4:00 P.M. PDT on Dec. 4, 2020.
