MDOT MTA enhances customer experience with real-time signage at subway, light-rail stations
The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) has launched a pilot program of real-time digital signage starting with three locations: Mondawmin and Rogers Avenue Metro Subway stations and the Patapsco Light Rail stop.
New digital kiosks and monitors expand MDOT MTA rider communication at these transfer hubs and enhance the passenger’s transit experience, especially for riders connecting by rail. The pilot program is part of a $3.5 million “Beyond the Bus Stop” Federal Transit Administration improvement grant received by MDOT MTA.
“We are pleased to bring these improvements to our customers, strengthening connections between MDOT MTA bus and rail services,” said Holly Arnold, MDOT MTA acting administrator. “Providing the most accurate schedule information available delivers on our commitment to provide reliable transit and world-class customer service.”
Real-time information enables riders to know when their bus will arrive so they can best plan their trip and avoid delays. In 2018, in partnership with its Transit app, MDOT MTA launched real-time tracking for all local buses. Real-time tracking was expanded to Commuter Bus in June 2019 and MARC Train in August 2020.
MDOT MTA is working to develop real-time information capabilities on both Metro Subway and Light Rail by the end of 2021 to be able to offer a seamless and integrated transit experience.
“Real-time tracking and these new kiosks provide our riders with the reliable information they need and demonstrate how we’re working to integrate service across modes to help achieve door-to-door service for customers,” said MDOT Secretary Greg Slater.
