The operations of a transit system today are more complex and integrate not only different modes of transportation, but also regional, city, and county partners. At ENGIE, this trend resonates with the company's strength at integrating multiple modes of transportation and multiple regional operations into one back office system, the Navineo Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), resulting in better data accuracy, better planning, resulting in integrated and homogeneous passenger information.
This type of multi-center regional service is prevalent today in the United Kingdom and Europe and is growing here in North America, with the emergence of regional mobility providers such as MARTA in the Atlanta Metropolitan region, RideKC in Kansas City or the RTC in Quebec City, aiming at providing innovative mobility for their region. This trend will continue to expand as transit agencies integrate more modes of transportation under their umbrella.
Already in operations in the Greater Paris area for the past 8 years, ENGIE provides a single solution to manage several transit operations centers from one private operator. Each of these centers has their own data, bus fleet, drivers, but they share the same central system, Navineo, that the operator’s management can access to locate bus in real-time or measure the performance of each site. One advantage for them is the possibility to add more centers of operations over time, in less time and more cost-effectively.
Other examples can be found on-board, where Engie is able to provide connections information to riders aboard the bus. Number of bike-share available at the next station, or from which platform the next train is departing when arriving at the trains station, are example of connections information provided to the bus riders, making it easier for them to continue their journey thanks to the Navineo system.
“Engie is really at the forefront of providing multimodal solutions that allows transit agencies to manage multiple modes of transportation, manage connections and providing homogeneous real-time information to transit riders,” said Thomas Huentz, operations director for North America.
The advantages of a single back office system integrating all modes is also on the data side, with a single data collection and storage source for all partners and mode of transportation, making it easier for transit agencies to analyses data and plan their system at the regional level with better, accurate data.
The integration of all modes of transportation into a single mobility offering is one answer of the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) trends and what transit riders expect as part of their journey, and this is how the Navineo ITSS takes part of the new mobility mix.
