MeVa is looking for a small transit vehicle (minibus) that incorporates a robust dual rear wheel drive chassis with a low-floor style body (body-on-chassis cutaway) and a ramp, versus a traditional wheelchair lift, for better mobility accessibility. MeVa believes this style of vehicle will enhance vehicle operations with quicker passenger loading times, while providing a more user-friendly vehicle for all riders, especially those using any type of mobility-device. In our research other low-floor cutaways currently on the market come close but do not have all the features we need, making it truly unique and new to the market. Thus, this vehicle will be a prototype which MeVa would like to road-test for a period of 4 months and then provide feedback for possible engineering refinement and retrofit. The final vehicle configuration would then have to be Altoona tested, before being approved for market wide availability, and returned to MeVa. A successful vehicle launch will lead to a second RFP being issued next year as a joint procurement with other Massachusetts RTAs to procure multiple vehicles over multiple years.
