Grants Approved for Colorado Transit Projects
Colorado’s Transportation Commission has awarded $14 million of FASTER funds for a variety of statewide, regional and local transit projects, benefiting bus operators, including cities, counties, special authorities and nonprofit agencies serving the elderly and disabled.
Along with the FASTER funding, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) Division of Transit and Rail (DTR) is awarding and distributing $7.3 million in Federal Transit Administration funding to agencies statewide, assisting projects such as replacing or rehabilitating buses, expansion of a park-and-ride lot, and rehabilitation of a maintenance garage.
“With recent reductions in federal funding aimed at bus projects, we put an increased emphasis this year on replacing or rehabilitating existing capital equipment, rather than building new projects,” said Division of Transit and Rail Director Mark Imhoff. “In fact, 103 vehicles will be replaced or rehabilitated with these funds, and five RTD light rail trains will be refurbished.”
Imhoff added the buses are not just for large city bus systems. Eighty of the vehicles are smaller ones, serving rural communities or providing specialized service to the elderly and disabled. Another $500,000 was awarded to operate three regional bus routes.
In addition, $3 million in FASTER funds will support Bustang, CDOT’s new interregional express bus service along Interstate 25 between Denver, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs and on I-70, between Denver and Glenwood Springs. Bustang is scheduled to begin service on July 13, 2015.
All the projects listed below are scheduled for Fiscal Year 2016, which begins July 1:
