Urine-soaked elevators at Powell and Civic Center BART and Muni stations may soon be flushed permanently.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors approved $1.6 million to staff elevators with attendants and boost homeless outreach in transit stations as part of its $1.2 billion budget on Tuesday. Those funds will be matched by BART, according to the agency.
The elevator program is simple, SFMTA Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin told the San Francisco Examiner: Staff will stand around (and in) the elevators to stop people from urinating and defecating in them.
