On Feb. 1, 2011, Metro Transit and the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Student Government launched the MavRide Pass Program. During the past 13 semesters, students’ use of the free, unlimited MavRide Pass has grown. Initially available to the first 400 interested students each semester, MavRide is now available to any interested UNO student, faculty and staff member. The program is approaching a milestone: the 250,000th passenger trip is expected to be recorded during the week of Sept. 27.
Following the introduction of the MavRide Program, the University has invested resources and increased partnerships adding the following four alternative commuting options that provide both personal and community benefits.
- B-Cycle: A bike-sharing program conveniently located on Dodge Campus, Pacific Campus and many nearby communities, including Dundee and Downtown
- ZimRide: A private ridesharing social network with free access
- ZipCar: A carsharing program with discounted access;
- Emergency Ride Home Service: a free taxi ride in the event of an emergency to students, staff and faculty using alternative transportation methods to get to UNO.
On Sept. 30, the University of Nebraska will host a Sustainable Transportation Showcase for their students, faculty, staff and the media and general public to learn more about their environmentally friendly travel options. Representatives of the individual programs will be available to discuss and field questions.
