Whistler Transit Operators Serve Strike Notice

Jan. 15, 2016

Stalled negotiations with PW Transit Canada Ltd have forced over 90 transit operators represented by Unifor Local 114 to serve strike notice to the employer. No commencement date for a strike has been set, but the operators are eligible to begin job action on Jan. 16.

"It has been a very frustrating process," said Gavin Davies, Unifor's national representative on the bargaining committee. "Our members work hard and deserve fair compensation, the ability to retire with some dignity, and take annual vacation with their families."

Unifor has committed to giving the travelling public 24 hours notice before beginning job action.

"We want to get this resolved and continue to serve the public in Whistler and Squamish," said Davies. "But unfortunately the employer doesn't appear interested in reaching a deal during the peak ski season."

The bargaining committee has attempted to reach a deal using a mediator for two consecutive days without success. Major outstanding issues include the ability to take paid vacation time, RRSP, shift schedules, and wages.
