Calgary Transit’s newest bus rapid transit (BRT) line, MAX Yellow, will begin servicing Mount Royal University, Rockview Hospital, Southland Leisure Center and other southwest destinations on Dec. 23.
The rapid transit network now serves all four quadrants of the city with the addition of the MAX Yellow line, bringing more convenience, comfort and connections. Other BRT lines include the MAX Purple serving East Hills to City Center; the MAX teal serving Westbrook to Douglas Glen; and the MAX Orange serving Brentwood to Saddletowne. MAX service runs seven days a week every 12-18 minutes during peak hours and every 20-30 minutes during off-peak hours.
Calgary Transit says MAX service provides more comfort than its regular bus service thanks to heated shelters, larger platforms, real-time displays, improved lighting and CCTV security cameras and cleaner stations since all MAX stations are part of a continuous cleaning and maintenance program.
MAX Service is also more convenient with traffic signal priority, fewer stops and queue jumps to bypass traffic. Signal priority modifies traffic signals along the route to provide an extended green signal when a MAX bus is approaching. At many signalized intersections, queue jumps allow a MAX bus to enter its own lane to receive an advanced green light to bypass traffic. MAX service also has fewer stops than the regular bus service, making commute times faster.
Along with more comfort and convenience, MAX service also provides better connections. With fewer transfers and better connections to major destinations, the CTrain and other bus routes, Calgary Transit says riders can easily get to where they need to go.
MAX fares are the same as taking a bus or CTrain and all current Calgary Transit route-planning tools can be used to plan a trip. The MAX Orange, Teal and Purple lines are already in service, taking riders anywhere from the University of Calgary and the Genesis Center to the Douglas Glen Park ‘n’ Ride and the Westbrook CTrain station.
