After almost five years of planning and working together to develop ideas to create a better Midtown, the RTC is close to breaking ground on the Virginia Street Bus RAPID Transit Extension Project.

The RTC anticipates construction activities will start the first week of September. The team may start to place equipment around the corridor in August. The majority of work for the first phase will be complete in spring of 2019.

The first phase of construction will upgrade and relocate utilities underground. This is a major investment in our community. Once the utility improvements are done, the next phase of the project will begin in the spring. That phase will include upgraded sidewalks that meet ADA standards, roadway construction, new landscaping and finishes, community seating, and lighting.

The final phase of this project will extend RTC’s RAPID transit bus route north to UNR on Virginia Street, further connecting Reno’s Midtown and downtown area to the campus. You’ll see new bus stations going in, similar to what exists now on Virginia Street. This service is called RAPID because the buses are able to quickly get people where they need to go with fewer stops, more easily accessible bus stops with level boarding, and coordination with traffic signals.
