TN: The TMA Group Welcomes a New Board Member
The TMA Group (Transportation Management Association) is pleased to welcome Ken Browning, assistant vice chancellor for facilities and construction at Vanderbilt Medical Center to the TMA Group Board of Directors.
Julian Bibb, TMA Chairman, said, “I look forward to working with Assistant Vice Chancellor Ken Browning, who is such a respected professional, as a member of The TMA Group Board of Directors. Developing efficient multimodal transportation options is vital to our area in attracting and retaining businesses in our area. The TMA Group is moving our regional forward in addressing, meeting, and expanding the needs of alternative transportation in an affordable, economically sustainable, and environmentally sound way.”
Regarding his appointment to The TMA Board of Directors, Vice Chancellor Browning states, “In my many roles at Vanderbilt over the past 30 years, I can say one of my most enjoyable was participating in the creation of free mass transportation for Vanderbilt’s staff and students (to the University and back home). The economics that drove the success of that program are truly incredible. First, the roughly 800 staff who regularly participate save more than $500,000 per year in transportation cost; second the University saves more than $500,000 per year in parking space cost. Finally, I would argue the synergistic effect that this program has had on Vanderbilt’s continued effort to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (by more than 18.5% over the past 5 years) is real. Having the honor and opportunity to spread that success to our broader community is truly exciting. Thank you to the Transportation Management Association Board of Directors for allowing me to be a part of your program.”
Browning has served in his current position for the last three years. Prior to that appointment he was the Director of Plant Services at Vanderbilt for twenty-six years. Ken holds Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Science from the University of TN in Knoxville. He holds an ‘unlimited’ General Contractor’s license on behalf of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Ken has been a key leader in the development of alternative transportation options, aimed at parking demand reduction, to include the development of VUMC’s valet parking and mass transportation programs. During Ken’s tenure the Medical Center has grown from approximately 1.5 to 10 million square feet. He has also served as the Chair of the Medical Center’s Safety and Disaster committees for over 15 years. His wife of 22 years, Suzie, is the Chief Financial Officer of Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee.
