Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner recently announced TransIT Services of Frederick County’s recognition as the Initiative of the Year from the Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition’s (GWRCCC) Fourth Annual Awards. The annual award ceremony was comprised of eight different categories – from Fleet Manager of the Year to Initiative of the Year.

TransIT won Initiative of the Year for implementing five fully-electric refurbished buses into the fleet and for installing ten charging stations. The project won for playing a key role in successfully implementing a significant and complex alternative fuels challenge during the past year.

The fully-electric refurbished buses will reduce fuel costs and consumption and are projected to save $20,000 per year on fuel costs. TransIT Services of Frederick County is the first transit property on the East Coast to have refurbished electric buses and charging stations on site. The project was made possible through a collaboration of four different organizations – the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA), and Frederick County. TransIT was a finalist along with Montgomery County’s Delivering Green Fleet Service and the Petroleum Reduction Action and Renewable Energy Action Plan within Prince George’s County.
