CATS joins Sustain Charlotte and Charlotte Air Awareness in Clean Commute Challenge
Charlotte Area Transit System, Charlotte Air Awareness and Sustain Charlotte will co-sponsor the Clean Commute Challenge through the landmark initiative Way2Go CLT. Way2Go CLT is a collaborative effort to encourage community groups, organizations and individuals to embrace sustainable mobility through walking, biking, taking public transportation, telecommuting or car-pooling.
The goal of this free, region-wide sustainable transportation challenge is to reduce air emissions from commuter traffic during the height of ozone season, which takes place throughout the summer. The global cost of unsustainable car commuting is $360 billion, which locally results in ground-level ozone formation. However, when people choose clean commuting they save on automobile gas and maintenance, increase health benefits associated with more physical activity and, best of all, for every mile saved, almost a pound of carbon will not be released into the atmosphere.
The challenge runs from June 1 – July 31, 2017, and participants will be eligible to win exciting prizes. Winners will only be chosen from counties within the Charlotte ozone maintenance area which includes Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Union and York (SC). Participants must log clean commute trips using Way2GoCLT.com or the Way2GoCLT Commuter Tracker app. An individual user has to log at least 20 trips, or 10 roundtrips, on the website or the app during June 1 – July 31, 2017 to qualify for prizes.
