A site has been selected for the new BC Transit operations and maintenance facility in Campbell River, at 1150 Evergreen Road. The proposed new building will include features to support the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) technology.

The centrality of the new location provides excellent access to key transportation corridors for BC Transit vehicles, while the increased lot size will help pave the way for future expansion. At nearly five acres, the new location is approximately seven times larger than the existing Campbell River facility.

“The Government of Canada is committed to funding projects that help meet increasing transit needs across the country,” said the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “With demand growing steadily in Campbell River, we are pleased to see this project progressing. Once complete, it will not only support better daily transit services for users, but help lay the groundwork for economic development and middle-class job creation."

“Our government is committed to making life more affordable for British Columbians, and public transit is a key service which contributes towards this goal,” said Claire Trevena, minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “I look forward to seeing construction get started on this new building that will serve transit users in my community.”

The new facility will help support the increasing popularity of sustainable public transportation in the region. Since 2000, Campbell River ridership has risen over 91 per cent, increasing from 327,885 to 627,374 trips taken annually.

“The Campbell River Transit System has experienced exceptional growth in recent years,” said Drew Hadfield, city of Campbell River transportation manager. “Following this success, this new, expanded facility will allow us to better meet the demands of commuters in the region, helping to deliver the most robust transportation solutions possible.”

The project represents a $15 million commitment in Campbell River transit, and will position the city to meet future demands for transportation in the region, in addition to improving operational efficiency. The new facility is part of the almost $160 million in federal and provincial funding for BC Transit projects that was first announced in June 2016. Information about Public Transit Infrastructure Fund is available on BCTransit.com.

“The new facility will allow BC Transit and our local partners to prove more effective and efficient transit services in Campbell River,” said Aaron Lamb, BC Transit vice president of asset management. “We will also be able to better connect people and communities in the region.”

Provincial and federal funding for the city also means the addition of modern buses with improved technology, including closed-circuit TV (CCTV) to improve the safety of passengers, and drivers and automatic passenger counters that will enable BC Transit to optimize service delivery, based on informed data.
