PTC Expert Michael Steffen Joins HNTB

Michael Steffen joined HNTB Corp. as senior systems project manager, specializing in positive train control. He serves clients nationwide from his base in Kansas City, Missouri.

As an expert in the federally mandated PTC initiative, he provides leadership and system expertise in design reviews and knowledge in development of safety-critical system requirements and tracing.

“Michael is a proven leader with a track record of tenaciously delivering projects effectively and within schedule and budget constraints,” said Ian Choudri, HNTB national rail and transit business development director and senior vice president. “As HNTB works to help improve U.S. rail safety through the PTC initiative, Michael’s commitment to innovation and knowledge of PTC provide our clients vital expertise.”

Prior to joining HNTB, Steffen served a rail technology supply company on the Denver Eagle P3 rail project, where his responsibilities included helping implement the first Interoperable Train Control/PTC-based wireless crossings system in North America. At HNTB, he will continue to serve that project and the San Diego North County Transit District PTC project.

Earlier in his career, he served General Electric as lead systems engineer – railroad crossing products, where he was lead inventor on multiple PTC-based wireless crossings and the primary inventor for two rail crossing algorithms that received U.S. patents.

Steffen’s awards and honors include the 2013 GE Transportation Award for Innovation and the 2012 GE Transportation Award for Early Career Advancement.

Steffen earned a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a Bachelor of Science in math from Evangel University.
