The work on the Harrisburg line, which started in March, is part of a $122 million project between Harrisburg and Lancaster.

Amtrak started the fourth phase of its track renewal on the Harrisburg line Wednesday, marking the project’s halfway point, the company announced.

The work on the Harrisburg line, which started in March, is part of a $122 million project between Harrisburg and Lancaster. Projects of this caliber would typically take around two years, but Amtrak is using a combination of single and full track outages to improve efficiency, according to a press release.

“What we’re focused on is getting all the work done that we can and try to pull that two years’ worth of work into one year. We’ve had a really strong start,” Laura Mason, executive vice president of capital delivery for Amtrak, said.

Train service is normal Friday through Sunday and before 8 a.m. and after 4 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.

An additional train car has been added to the Pennsylvanian during the work. Shuttle buses currently replace the train service from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday between Harrisburg and Lancaster.

Amtrak expects work to conclude in November with the project coming to an end in late December.

Travelers should check Amtrak.com or the Amtrak mobile app for up-to-date train schedules and substitute bus transportation information.
