David Evans and Associates, Inc. Celebrates 40th Anniversary
In 1976, a gallon of gas cost 59 cents and the average home $43,000; personal income averaged $16,000 and the Federal debt was $629 billion; newly released films included “Rocky” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest;” and, in that bicentennial year, the professional services consulting firm of David Evans and Associates, Inc. (DEA) opened its doors in Portland, Oregon. In 2016, DEA is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Since its start as a two-person civil engineering firm serving land developers in the Portland Metropolitan area, the firm has diversified its services and grown to more than 1,000 people in eight states and 23 offices. The firm has served more than 9,000 clients and generated more than $2.5 billion in revenue during its 40-year history.
According to Chairman and CEO Al Barkouli, Ph.D, P.E., “It is great to celebrate 40 years. We are deeply grateful to our clients for the opportunities they have given us, which have enabled us to improve the quality of life for many people and many communities. I so proud of the efforts of our employees who have helped us earn the trust of these clients.”
The firm’s projects have received awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) at the state and national levels as well as the National Association of Environmental Planners, Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration and numerous civic and architecture/engineering/construction industry organizations.
With its roots in Portland, DEA’s work is evident throughout the metropolitan area. Signature projects include work on the Oregon Convention Center, a major segment of TriMet’s Portland-to-Milwaukie LRT program and program management of the Sellwood Bridge design and construction.
Accomplishments in other states where the firm operates include Project Management Oversight for the Federal Transit Administration on the Fulton Street Transit Center and Ferry Street and Battery Park Stations in New York City, home of the recently opened Oculus.
In Arizona, DEA provided transportation planning for Grand Canyon National Park, preliminary and final engineering and surveying for Cityscape in Phoenix and preliminary site design and final engineering for Westgate City Center in Glendale.
In California, DEA’s award-winning projects include Taylor Yard in Los Angeles, the Space Shuttle Endeavour Move through Los Angeles, and Lasselle Sports Park in Moreno Valley.
Highlights of the firm’s work in Colorado include services for the final design of FasTracks West Rail Line Corridor LRT Extension Final Design in Denver, the Arapahoe Corridor Study and Arapahoe/Parker Interchange Final Design in Arapahoe County.
In Washington State, DEA provided services for Tucannon River Wind Farm in Columbia County, which was the first energy project in North America to receive the Envision Gold Award for Sustainable Infrastructure. Other Washington State projects include work on Bellevue Towers in Bellevue and Bear Creek Stream Restoration in Redmond.
With its 82-foot research vessel, The Blake, operating out of Gulfport, Mississippi, DEA is performing charting surveys of Gulfport Channel and Chandeleur Sound.
For more than 40 years, DEA has provided clients with unique and innovative design services for transportation, water, land, environmental, energy, and marine infrastructure systems. The firm’s staff includes engineers, surveyors, hydrographers, planners, landscape architects and natural resources scientists. DEA has 23 offices in eight states and consistently ranks among ENR’s (Engineering News Record’s) “Top 100 Pure Design Firms” in the United States.
