NYCT's Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College 2/5 Station Elevator Replacement Project Completed Ahead of Schedule
The elevator at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit (NYCT) Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College 2 and 5 station reopened ahead of schedule.
The elevator was closed from July 7, 2021, as part of a larger ongoing project to replace 11 hydraulic elevators at seven stations throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
“Another on schedule MTA project!” said MTA Acting Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “Projects like this prove the MTA’s project management strategies – like bundling – are working. The MTA is committed to building a 21st century fully accessible system that is the best way for riders to navigate the city.”
“Modernized equipment means customers can expect smoother and more reliable service for the long haul,” added MTA Construction and Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “Between our new approaches to delivery and public-private partnerships, dozens of stations will receive accessibility improvements, which is another testament to the MTA’s commitment to a fully accessible transit system.”
The elevator replacement project includes:
- Full replacement of elevator cab and associated equipment within the cab, shaft and pit. Modernized parts will mean a smoother ride and more reliable service.
- Replacing and modernizing all machine room equipment for better and more reliable service.
- Replacing and modernizing all CCTV and fire alarm equipment for enhanced security.
- Upgrading the LiftNet remote monitoring equipment to allow crews to respond more quickly to future maintenance concerns.
“Reliable and modernized elevators are crucial not only for people with mobility disabilities, but also any riders traveling with luggage, strollers or bicycles,” said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. “Accessibility is one of the MTA’s top priorities, and I am glad to see projects like the one at the Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College station are being completed faster than ever before.”
Work to install a new elevator serving the Manhattan-bound platform at the nearby Church Av station began today, Wednesday, Dec. 22 and is expected to be completed in Spring 2022. The station will remain open, and the elevator to the Brooklyn-bound platform will remain open. For an accessible travel alternative, customers are encouraged to use the elevators that access the B44/B44 SBS bus routes, or take the Brooklyn-bound to the Flatbush Avenue-Brooklyn College station.
