The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has renovated 20 stations under New York City Transit’s (NYC Transit) Station Re-NEW-vation Program. With the completion of Court Square Station on the 7 line in Queens and 8 Avenue station on the L in Manhattan, NYC Transit has now completed 11 of 12 stations that were scheduled to receive renovation work in the first quarter of 2023. The renovations took place during outages planned for other reasons during weekends in order to minimize impacts to customers, also providing a visible fresh and clean look when customers returned.
NYC Transit crews made a variety of upgrades to renovate the stations, from concrete repairs and water mitigation efforts to replacing tiles along the station walls and deep cleaning the entire station from the staircase to the track. In addition to customer-facing improvements, crews also deep cleaned and renovated employee crew rooms. After a successful first group of nine stations were completed along the D line in the Bronx in 2022, NYC Transit expanded the program to 12 additional stations across Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan in the first quarter of 2023.
“The Station Re-NEW-vation Program embodies NYC Transit’s goal of increasing customer satisfaction, and the results have been everything we would hope it would be,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. “Customers are returning to stations that feel new, hopefully inspiring some neighborhood pride and making their commute more enjoyable. I can’t thank the NYC Transit team enough, and I am excited to further expand the program as we strive to provide faster, cleaner and safer subway service.”
“All the pieces matter when you talk about delivering the best possible service for customers,” said NYC Transit Senior Vice President of Subways Demetrius Crichlow. “Normally when we talk about state of good repair, we are referring to the rails, but this program focuses on the station environment. NYC Transit crews have worked hard during these outages to completely renovate these stations, from repaving a broken piece of concrete at the top of the staircase, down to installing new tile along the station walls.”
About the Station Re-NEW-vation Program
The Station Re-NEW-vation Program is one of the major initiatives in NYC Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve subway customer experience. Cleanliness is one of the top five attributes customers cite in surveys that would improve satisfaction and encourage them to travel more. In response, NYC Transit developed this program that would integrate renovations into planned station outages.
When work is completed at the West 8th St./N.Y. Aquarium Station in Brooklyn, NYC Transit will have completed renovations at 21 stations through the program. The goal is to complete a total of 50 stations by the end of 2023.
