Transit Police have arrested a Gresham man for the theft of over $10,000 in TriMet fares from a FedEx distribution center in Troutdale.

Police booked Tyler McManus into the Multnomah County Jail on Tuesday afternoon and the defendant was arraigned Wednesday morning.

Tracking tickets

For over a year, TriMet had been noticing missing transit tickets and passes as some retailers were not receiving their full allotment. Transit Police Officer Bill Cote and Deputy Austin Allen were assigned to the case in August 2015 to track down the missing tickets and passes.

Working with TriMet, Officer Cote and Deputy Allen followed the fares from packaging at TriMet to the FedEx distribution center in Troutdale, and then to retailers throughout the metro area. They determined all the fares were in the packages as they left TriMet, but some were missing when they reached the retailer. Further investigation led the officers to the FedEx distribution center in Troutdale where they discovered McManus, a FedEx employee, had opened packages, removed fares and sold them.

The case and the investigation are ongoing.

TriMet has since ended its contract with FedEx.
